Established in 1774, the unincorporated town of Jefferson, Maryland, has a long, rich history. Interestingly, the town was briefly incorporated between 1831 and 1832, but ultimately its residents decided they didn’t need a municipal government so it disincorporated. This charming little community is situated at the western base of Catoctin Mountain in southwestern Frederick County. Among the many advantages of residency, the town is in proximity to multiple transportation routes which make traveling in and around the community relatively easy. U.S. Route 340 bypasses Jefferson to the south, and Maryland Route 180 cuts directly through the community. Via U.S. 340 residents can reach Frederick, which is nine miles northeast, and Harpers Ferry, which is thirteen miles southwest.
Though comprised of just over two square miles, Jefferson has a surprising number of amenities and businesses. Among them are diverse establishment like A Child’s Garden preschool center, Adrienne’s Flower Delights florist, Catoctin Pottery, Fast Lane Fabrications, Hemp’s Meat, Jefferson Family Dentistry, Jefferson Pastry Shop, Jhoon Rhee Black Belt Academy, Mar-Lu Nursery & Landscaping, Sunnyside Sculpture Studio, and The Little Red Barn Ice Cream Cafe. In addition to all of these conveniently located establishments, schools are also in proximity.
