Home to just under 150,000 residents, Washington County, Maryland, is situated in the western part of the state and is the first county to have ever been named for George Washington. Hagerstown is the county seat and its largest city. Because of the county’s long, rich history, throughout the area you will find a seemingly endless list of historic and historical sites, as well as fabulous opportunities for recreation, entertainment, shopping, and dining. Washington County also encompasses many excellent options for prospective homebuyers seeking charming, rural communities with quick and convenient access to modern-day amenities. Among its most noteworthy communities is Smithsburg, Maryland.
Smithsburg was platted in 1814 in northeastern Washington County. The town’s development was the direct result of advances in agricultural technology, the arrival of the railroad, and migration paths. Much the existing community was established by 1923 and aside from some new construction and road improvements, the town retains much of its mid-nineteenth to early-twentieth-century architectural character. For the most part, Smithsburg has been untouched by modern architectural trends and therefore has an alluring vintage atmosphere. In addition to its gorgeous historical architecture, the town is also a place of abundant natural beauty. Characterized by fruit orchards, open space, and rolling hills, the town has grown to twice its original size and is now home to roughly three thousand citizens making it Washington County’s third-largest municipality.
Points of interest in Smithsburg include Red Heifer Winery, Smithsburg Veterans Park and the Smithsburg Town Museum. The town is also known for its exciting community events which include Smithsburg Fire Co. Carnival, Smithsburg Pride Days, a Children’s Christmas Party, an Easter Egg Hunt, a Memorial Day Ceremony, and an annual Steam and Craft Show, among several others. For all of these reasons and more, Smithsburg is an excellent place to buy a home. Homes for sale in Smithsburg include attached and detached residences that provide options for homebuyers in all stages of life. That said, the bulk of available properties in Smithsburg are single-family homes of varying architectural styles, ages, and sizes. Because of the diversity of Smithsburg real estate, listing prices fall across an extensive range.
